A beautiful beach with calm waters, soft sand and heights - Alto de Ipioca - from which you can gaze at the Atlantic Ocean, Ipioca is one of the top attractions in Maceió, the capital of Alagoas.

Located about 15 miles north of the town center, the beach with a quiet village will have Iberostar Magia Maceió, the brand’s first hotel in Alagoas and the fourth in Brazil. Scheduled to open in 2015, the resort will have 226 rooms and 18 suites, expansive pools, a spa and fitness center, and several meeting spaces, among other services and amenities.

One of the best ways to enjoy Ipioca is at Hibiscus (www.hibiscusalagoas.com.br), a barraca de praia, or beach lounge, which reopened in mid-2013 after renovations and a change in management. The lounge is now part of the group which owns Mar & Cia in Paripueira Beach.

Hibiscus has a restaurant, swimming pools, a playground, resting areas in the shade of coconut trees, a massage tent, and showers. DJ music plays in the background; catamaran tours of the area's natural ocean pools are available for an extra fee. Admission costs R$15 (subject to change).

A different perspective of Ipioca awaits the traveler at Altos de Ipioca, where chef Silvana Chamusca serves fine seafood dishes and desserts with regional ingredients, such as coalho cheese, at her Vila Chamusca (phone: 55-82-3355-1639), with great views of the beach from up high.

Coral Coast

Maceió's northern beaches - Ponta Verde, Jatiúca, Guaxuma, Garça Torta, Riacho Doce, Pratagi, Ipioca and Costa Brava - merge into the Coral Coast, with the world's second largest barrier reef.

Traveling north on this 81-mile stretch, tourists will find a string of quaint towns and some of the most scenic beaches on the Brazilian Northeast.

Paripueira, situated about 22 miles north of central Maceió, is the first town up the coast, best known as the home of a manatee preservation marine park - Parque Municipal Marinho de Paripueira, on the beach by the same name - and Sonho Verde beach. This is a top snorkeling destination in Alagoas.

Barra de Santo Antonio comes next. The town with about 15,000 inhabitants on the Santo Antonio River has mangroves, beautiful beaches, mainly Tabuba, Carro Quebrado and Ilha da Croa, and some constructions dating back to the Dutch occupation of the Brazilian Northeast in the 18th century.

Barra de Camaragibe, Marceneiro and Morros are well-known beaches in the next town up: Passo de Camaragibe, with about 14,000 inhabitants.

São Miguel dos Milagres, one of the top destinations in Alagoas, is next. Toque, Porto da Rua and São Miguel dos Milagres are some of the beaches on this beautiful stretch of the coast with lovely pousadas and amazing views from Morro do Cruzeiro.

Porto Calvo, with about 25,000 inhabitants, has a 17th-century church and not much else left from the time it was founded by the Dutch.

Porto de Pedras, a particularly attractive patch of shoreline about 19 miles to the north, has attractive pousadas, especially on Tatuamunha and the more pristine Praia do Patacho. Casa patacho and Casa Olivia, Pousada Patacho and Vila do Patacho.

Japaratinga, with some old buildings and charming pousadas, has Barreira do Boqueirão, Bitigui and Japaratinga as its best beaches.

Maragogi, much more touristic, is to the north. The city with 25,000 inhabitants and several hotels and pousadas is the state's second top touristic destination, thanks to its beaches - São Bento, Peroba, Burgalhau, Barra Grande - and natural pools formed by the coral reefs which allow for both snorkeling and scuba diving.
