How to Repaint Powder Coated Surfaces
- 1). Clean the surface using a degreasing detergent mixed with water. Remove all the oil, grease and dirt from the surface.
- 2). Remove any white, chalky deposits and corrosion with an abrasive nylon pad.
- 3). Check for rust if you are repainting an iron or steel surface. If you find rust, use a power sander to remove it down to the bare metal.
- 4). Check the powder coating to see if it is flaking or peeling. Use a power sander to remove any peeling or flaking powder coat.
- 5). Rub any powder coat that is still on the surface with the abrasive nylon pad. This will provide a rough surface for the new paint to adhere to.
- 6). Wipe down the surface with a wet rag to remove any dust left from the previous steps.
- 7). Apply primer to any areas of exposed metal. This step should be done quickly, before the metal has a chance to oxidize. Use a type of primer designed for the type of metal you are painting. Use a brush or paint sprayer, depending on the qualify of finish you desire. Generally, a spray applicator will give you a more even surface. Allow the primer to cure for the length of time specified on the label. This normally will be 24 hours.
- 8). Paint the surface with a brush, roller or sprayer.
