    Classic Face Mask

    • A classic face mask may cover all or only a part of the face. This style of mask has a variety of uses in various cultures, visual art, literature and fashion. They are used in theatrical performances such as the Noh theater in Japan, Greek theater, English medieval plays and Roman drama. They are also be used in costume parties, masquerade balls and cultural celebrations such as Mardi Gras. There are also face masks placed in dead persons' faces prior to burial such as those used by ancient Egyptians as part of the mummification process.

    Headdress Masks

    • A headdress mask is composed of a face mask with an extension of a headdress also covering or designing the head area. It usually consists of a representation of a human or an animal head. Examples of headdress masks are found in various ethnic groups in the area of the Cross River in Nigeria and among the Bamana in Mali. Modern ones are usually worn by those participating in the Mardi Gras, showgirls in Las Vegas-style shows, and sometimes, even beauty queens wearing elaborate costumes in pageants.

    Shoulder Masks

    • A shoulder mask is a facial mask that consists of a large and heavy design below the face, which usually extends onto the wearer's shoulders or chests. It has a similar use and effect as the headdress mask. There are also some very heavy and intricate masks that are both shoulder and headdress masks. Many shoulder masks are worn in shamanic practices in North and Central America and the Mitsogo people of Gabon, Africa. The performers of the Ati-Atihan Festival of the Philippines use a combination of headdress and shoulder masks with an open facial area.

    Decorative or Wall Masks

    • A decorative or wall mask refers to a mask resembling the face of a human, animal, mythical, religious or supernatural figure. People typically hang such masks on the wall, in front of the door and other places for decoration, protection or celebration. This style of mask is seen in different parts of the world and is made from materials ranging from ceramic to wood. Some of the more popular ones include the Bulgarian decorative folk masks, African tribal masks, Venetian wall masks and Native American animal spirit masks.
