Instructions for Painting Murals
- 1). Select a photograph for your mural. If you are projecting your image directly on the wall, you can use a slide and a projector. It is also possible to work from an original drawing. Crop your photograph or drawing to match the dimensions of your wall. Divide your photo or sketch into 1-inch squares using a ruler and pencil.
- 2). Measure your wall with a tape measure. Use a pencil to mark out the wall in the same number of boxes. Sketch out your basic composition in pencil, using the grid to help you place elements accurately.
- 3). Mix acrylic paint to block out general shapes. Thin the paint with matte medium. Apply paint from the background to the foreground. Use large brushes and thin washes of color to paint the first layers. Continue to add more concentrated layers of paint, covering up all the pencil lines.
- 4). Step back to assess the mural. Correct any mistakes. Add finishing details with smaller brushes. Erase any remaining pencil lines.
- 5). Wash brushes with soap and water. Shake out excess water and allow brushes to dry upright.
