Ontario RV Camping
- Ontario, Canada, is located just to the east of the central Canada border by Quebec to the east and Manitoba to the west. A resident population of more than 12 million people within its provincial borders enjoys over 250,000 lakes and 894,639 square km of geographical terrain ranging from rolling, fertile farmlands to thickly forested lands dotted with lakes and streams to arid, remote wilderness. The highest density of both private and provincial park campgrounds specialized for the RV traveler can be found in central Ontario and in the southern half of the province extending from the St. Lawrence River Valley to Southwestern Ontario.
- Ontario climate is a continental climate with very warm summers and cold snowy winters. Locations near or on the Great Lakes most often see less extreme variation between seasonal temperatures but they also experience higher precipitation rates because of their proximity. Spring and fall are the mildest seasons for outdoor activities and make up the best seasons along with summer for the RV traveler to vacation within the province.
- Central Ontario east, with its woodlands, history and rural areas. hosts towns within its area such as Picton and Port Hope. Central Ontario west, with its heavy concentration of rivers, lakes and rugged high rocky cliff vistas offers fabulous fishing and hiking venues within driving distance of such unique Canadian heritage towns as Bancroft and Peterborough. Festival Country, known for its many lake and river villages that celebrate annual recurring ethnic festivals that share history with a new generation, is a great location for the traveler wanting to get out into the countryside but still be within distance to make a day trip into the Toronto area. And for RV travelers from the U.S. crossing into Windsor, Ontario, via Detroit, the southwestern region offers Carolinian forested terrain along with vineyards and world-renowned birding spots. For the RV traveler seeking remote beauty and solitude, Sunset Country's wilderness back country and 60,000 square miles of Boreal forested terrain in northwestern Ontario will provide an undisturbed and peaceful lake or river shore vacation.
- The busy season for Ontario provincial park campgrounds and privately owned RV parks is from mid-May to mid-October after fall foliage has peaked. Year-round campgrounds are few but available and often are found near metro locations or popular lake recreational areas but tend to be set up for the extended-stay RV traveler so they may not offer daily camping availability in the off-season months.
- RV campsites in any of Ontario's over 300 provincial parks vary park to park and within each park by the popularity of the site's location (river or lakeside, remote) and services offered (full service, electric only or nonserviced). Daily fees in 2010 ranged from $13.75 CAD for the lowest nonelectrical site in the system to $42.75 CAD for the most expensive full-service (water, electric and sewer) site. Privately owned campgrounds offering full-service RV campsites often have complimentary or fee-required wireless Internet and/or cable TV service available as well as scheduled social programs or kids' activities as added amenities. Daily double occupancy rates vary with each individual park and range from $28 CAD to $68 CAD with weekly discounts often offered for RV travelers staying longer than seven days.
