  For a rug under a dining table, all chair legs should remain on the rug with the chairs pulled out from the table. If the table is round, a square area rug can create an interesting contrast, while a round rug under a round table will create a harmonious look. To determine the size of a rug under a dining table, the World Floor Covering Association recommends allowing 2 feet on all edges or sides of the table. Add 4 feet to the diameter or 4 feet to the length and width.

  When selecting a round vs. square rug, think about how you want to use the bare floors around the borders. If you want to place large plants or triangular pieces of furniture into the corners of a room, then a round rug will create perfect spaces to highlight these items. Otherwise, a round rug may leave odd floor shapes with minimal functionality. If you want to place a bookcase or side table between the rug and the wall, then a square rug will leave rectangular spaces compatible with these pieces. For variety, you could place a square rug at a 45-degree angle to create corners for plants and triangular items.

  In a large oblong room that encompasses living and dining spaces, rugs can define and differentiate the two areas. A square rug would work well with the living room furniture, while a round rug may suit a round dining table. Couch and chair legs can rest entirely on a square rug, partly on and off, or completely off of a square rug. A harmonizing round rug under the dining table could provide a unifying element while providing variety.
