Amtrak is the premier long-distance train company in the U.S. Its routes run across the country and can be a great way to take a leisurely vacation. Though the train may be slower than other forms of transportation, you get to see the areas you are traveling through. Like any other train company, Amtrak has limitations on the amount, size and contents of baggage that can be taken onboard. These limits are per passenger. - Amtrak limits your carry-on baggage to two pieces per person. The two-item limit does not apply to personal items like purses or briefcases, laptops or baby items. The carry-on bags cannot weigh more than 50 pounds, nor can their dimensions exceed 28 by 22 by 14 inches. The baggage must clearly bear the passenger's name and address. If you do not have a tag on your baggage, you can get one at the Amtrak station.
- Amtrak allows each passenger to check three bags on trains that offer checked baggage. Not all trains offer this service, so you need to check in advance. These bags must weigh less than 50 pounds, and all three dimensions---length, width and height---must be less than 36 inches. Each checked bag beyond the third costs an additional $10.
The bags should be sturdily constructed, as Amtrak does not accept flimsy material or plastic tubs in checked baggage. The bags must have your name and address clearly attached, and you must check them in at least 30 minutes before your train leaves. - Some items are prohibited in carry-on baggage, including skis or snowboards, golf clubs and bikes. Other items are banned in all baggage, including checked baggage. Amtrak explicitly bans any weapons, flammable substances, dangerous chemicals, extremely fragile or valuable items, and animals, except service animals. Amtrak also reserves the right to reject any other items it considers unacceptable for transport.
