  Sewing is a great way to make unique items to decorate your home and to give as gifts. Even if you've never sewn before, you can create beautiful, handcrafted items. The trick is to choose projects that are easy and take very little time to do, so you can see and enjoy the results quickly. Start sewing fun things today by making simple things like throw pillows, curtains and baby blankets.
  
  

Throw Pillow

• Throw pillows add a personal touch to rooms and can be customized in countless ways. To begin, decide what size and shape pillow you want to make, and then buy fabric and stuffing. For a square or rectangular pillow, use a tape measure to mark how much material to cut. Add a half inch on all sides for seams. Cut other pillow shapes out of poster board, and trace them onto the fabric with chalk. This makes shapes like stars, ovals and hearts more symmetrical.
  
  Once you cut your fabric, put the right sides together and sew a 1/2-inch seam around the edges, leaving a three- to four-inch opening on one side for stuffing. Turn the fabric right side out, and stuff your pillow until it has the firmness you want. Using a needle and thread, close the opening by turning the fabric edges to the inside and sewing a slip stitch along the edge.
  
  

Curtains

• Curtains are easy to sew. To begin, measure the window to determine the length and width you want for your curtains. For flat curtains, add a couple of inches on all sides for hems. For gathers, add 12 inches to each panel. Add five inches to the length to account for hems and the curtain rod casing. Cut the curtain fabric to your dimensions.
  
  On the wrong side of the fabric, turn the edges in 1/4 inch for the hem and iron. Sew the 1/4-inch hem on all four sides. To finish the hems on the side edges of the curtain panels, do another 1/4 inch fold, iron and sew. Find the top of the curtain panel, fold it down and pin it at least one inch deeper than the diameter of the curtain rod. Sew along the bottom to make the rod casing. Fold the bottom of the curtain to the finished length you want and sew.
  
  

Baby Blanket

• To make a small swaddling blanket or floor blanket, choose one yard of cotton material and one yard of flannel or fleece. Pin the wrong sides together. Baste the two fabrics together around the outside edges. Pin satin blanket edging or two-inch bias tape around the outside edges of the blanket. Sew along the entire edge of the blanket where the edging meets the fabric. Fold the corners of the edging in at the corners before sewing for a finished look.
