Triglycerides are the form that fats take within the body as well as in most forms of food. They are also in circulation in blood, and together with cholesterol, form what is known as the plasma lipids. Triglycerides are the main component in vegetable and animal fat. Some amounts of triglycerides are needed for good health, but elevated levels pose a significant risk of coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis and other associated cardiovascular disorders. Triglycerides that show up in blood plasma are derived from fats that are present in food or from other dietary sources such as carbohydrates. Some studies indicate the role of triglycerides in heart disease could be attributed to their ability to inhibit levels of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or 'good' cholesterol. Although the reasons are still unclear, it appears that keeping triglycerides levels high could contribute to the thickening of arterial walls, a condition called atherosclerosis, which is a significant factor that can lead to heart disease and strokes. Elevated levels can also be a warning sign of other conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Getting to what constitutes triglycerides normal range can significantly lower risk, and is considered of prime importance should you have a family history of heart disease, or fall into what constitutes a high risk group. The best way to get triglycerides levels low, is to follow a sensible diet to lower triglycerides. This would mean cutting back on calories from saturated fats, and cholesterol rich foods, and adding healthier fats that can raise levels of HDL cholesterol.

Should cholesterol and associated triglycerides levels be appreciably high, you may also be prescribed certain cholesterol reducing drugs such as statins, niacins or fibrates to help bring them under control. Some doctors may also prescribe Omega-3 essential fatty acid supplements which are known to help lower cholesterol, in conjunction with a revised dietary plan that will aid in bringing levels to within what constitutes a normal range.
