How to Replace a 1999 Ford Explorer Serpentine Belt Tensioner
- 1). Ensure that the Explorer is parked on a flat and level surface. Open the hood for access to the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is located on the front of the engine between the crankshaft and the alternator.
- 2). Place a bare 3/8-inch socket wrench in the square slot at the bottom of the tensioner pulley. Push the socket wrench down to loosen the belt. Slide the belt off the pulley.
- 3). Unscrew the bolt at the top half of the socket wrench. Pull the bolt out of the tensioner pulley. Ensure that the washer stays on the bolt.
- 4). Pull the tensioner pulley off the engine. Replace it with a new pulley. Push the bolt and the washer onto the pulley and turn the bolt clockwise by hand to secure the tensioner pulley onto the engine.
- 5). Tighten the bolt with a socket wrench. Take the socket off the socket wrench.
- 6). Insert the empty socket wrench onto the square notch at the bottom of the pulley. Push the socket wrench down to loosen the pulley.
- 7). Slide the belt around the pulley. Release the socket wrench slowly. The tensioner will automatically tighten the belt. Pull the socket wrench off the pulley.
- 8). Start the Explorer to ensure the belt is running smoothly.
