How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Chevy Impala
- 1). Turn the car off before checking the power-steering fluid levels. If the engine is warm, allow the engine to cool off before checking the power-steering fluid.
- 2). Park the car on a level surface before checking power-steering fluid or any fluid located under the hood, as having the car parked on an incline can artificially change the fluid levels and cause a misread.
- 3). Check the power-steering fluid levels in your Chevy Impala once every 20,000 miles, or sooner if you notice fluid leaking from under the hood or are having problems with your power steering.
- 4). Find the power-steering pump reservoir, located on the passenger side of the vehicle. The reservoir should be at the back of the engine, behind the alternator. Consult your owner's manual for a more detailed map of the engine.
- 5). Look for the power-steering pump reservoir in the same location for any Chevy Impala from 1996 to the present, but consult your owner's manual for minor differences in earlier vehicle models.
- 6). Open the cap of the power-steering pump reservoir to check the fluid level. Keep the fluid level maintained between the low level mark and the maximum fluid level, topping off the fluid with Chevrolet-approved power-steering fluid if necessary.
