DIY Shock Replacement

    • 1). Put the vehicle in park and apply the emergency brake.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts from one of the tires with a tire iron, but do not remove them.

    • 3). Look in your vehicles owner's manual for the proper jack positioning. Place the jack in the correct location and lift the vehicle until the tire can be removed. Remove the lug nuts with the tire iron. Grasp the tire and remove it from the rotor.

    • 4). Locate the bolts that secure the shock absorber to the vehicle. Most shocks will have an upper and lower mounting bolt. Loosen this bolt by placing a ratchet and socket on the head of the bolt. Place a wrench on the nut and remove the bolt.

    • 5). Remove the bolts from the brackets. Pull the shock away from the vehicle.

    • 6). Place the new shock into the brackets. Align the mounting holes of the shock and the bracket so that the bolt may be inserted through the mounting holes. Insert the bolt and thread the retaining nut onto the bolt.

    • 7). Tighten the bolt and nut with a ratchet, socket and wrench. Install the second bolt in the same manner.

    • 8). Align the holes in the wheel with the wheel studs that protrude from the rotor and slide the tire back onto the axle.

    • 9). Thread the lug nuts onto the wheel studs and tighten them using a tire iron wrench.

Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the hydraulic jack.
