A Letter From a Daughter to Her Divorcing Parents

31
Dear Mom and Dad,

I was wondering if you could do something for Jimmy and me. Could you please tell me if there's anything we can do to stop your divorce and save your marriage? You say you don't love each other any more, and that makes us wonder if you've stopped loving us, too. We know we love you both, and we liked our family the way it was before Dad moved out. We don't like visiting his new house. It's dark and creepy there, we have to sleep on the floor because he doesn't have any beds, and he says he doesn't have enough money any more to take us to ballgames and stuff.

Mom, it isn't so great at your house, either. You're always too busy to pay any attention to us, and when you do talk to us you don't sound friendly like you used to do. After we go to bed, we hear you crying. If you're happy that you're getting a divorce and that Dad is gone like you tell us, then why do you cry so much? I don't cry unless I'm sad, and I feel pretty sad all the time now. Jimmy wants to hang on me all the time, and he cries when I leave him at his classroom at school. I remember when our family used to be happy and laughing all the time. That felt a lot better than all this sadness does now.

I want to ask you, just so I can understand you know, Mom, what's so wrong with Dad that you don't want to be with him any more? And, Dad, Mom is a good mother and feeds us good food and keeps our house clean. Why did you decide you didn't like her any more? Have you two tried to love each other again? I thought that once love was there, it would never go away, so that means that you both still love each other, down in your hearts. It's the reason you can't be happy now.

My friend Billy's parents yell at each other all the time. His dad hits his mother a lot, and awhile back he hit her so hard he broke her arm. His dad must really hate his mom. Mom, I never saw Dad treat you like that, and you never yelled a lot. It sounds to me like your marriage isn't nearly as broken as Billy's parents' is, and maybe if you tried, you could stop your divorce and save your marriage. Maybe you could even get someone to help you learn to love each other again.

Don't you think Jimmy and I are worth it?

Love,
Emily
