How to Cast a Bait Caster Reel
- 1). Locate the line control adjustment knob on the side of the reel. This will typically be a small knob located just below the handle. Turn the knob to the right to tighten. Hold the rod in front of you and press the spool release. If the plug or lure drops steadily to the ground no further adjustment is needed. If the plug or lure does not drop or drops quickly then the control should be tightened or loosened.
- 2). Adjust the brake control on the reel. Locate the large dial on the side of the reel that will typically be marked with numbers from one to 10 depending on the manufacturer. Turn the dial until it is located in the middle between five and seven. The brake helps to prevent the line from over-running when the lure contacts the water and reduces chances for backlash.
- 3). Hold the handle of the bait cast rod with your dominant hand. Position your hand so that the palm rests along side the reel and your index finger rests on top of the rod and hooks around the front base of the reel. Your thumb should rest comfortably on the spool and the remaining fingers should grip around the rod handle.
- 4). Adjust the length of the line extending from the end of the rod so that there is between 12 and 15 inches of line between the rod tip and the lure or plug.
- 5). Press the spool release button with your thumb and maintain pressure on the line in the spool with your thumb. Raise the rod tip back over your shoulder by bending your elbow. At this point, only bend your elbow as this will help control the forward momentum of the rod and lure and will help reduce the risks for backlash.
- 6). Bring the rod tip forward and down toward the target on the water. As the tip swings downward, release your thumb slightly from the line on the spool so it can be released toward the target. As the lure or plug approaches the water begin to slowly apply pressure to the line on the spool with your thumb to slow the speed of the lure. Continue to apply gradually increasing pressure as the lure contacts the water and slows.
- 7). Turn the handle of the reel when the lure or plug reaches the desired depth in the water and continue turning the handle to retrieve the plug or lure and wind the line onto the spool on the reel.
