Lesbian Health Question: Do I Need a Pap Test?
Do lesbians need pap tests when they have not had sex with men? This lesbian wanted to know:
Dear Kathy:
I would just like some information regarding Lesbian Health. I?m 23 years old and I was with a girl for six years and used sex toys. However I have never had sex with a man and was wondering if I need to have a pap smear test? I?ve asked a couple of friends but they don?t know and I?m too embarrassed to ask a doctor. Could you please let me know.
Signed,
Pap or No Pap?
Dear Pappy,
A pap smear is a good idea no matter who your sexual partner is. Even if you are not sexually active at all, it is still a good idea to get a pap and pelvic exam every year or two, depending on your doctor's recommendation.
Lesbians are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, just as heterosexual women are. And many STDs do not show any symptoms.
There?s no reason for you to be embarrassed about talking to a doctor about your sex life. If you don?t have a doctor that you can be honest with, then it?s time to find a new doctor!
Many Planned Parenthoods are known for being lesbian-friendly. Or see if there is a feminist health clinic in your town.
