The Viewfinder Frame
The viewfinder frame (v.
f.
) will help you see spatial relations and will also raise the accuracy of your drawing.
This device will make you focus more on what you are about to draw.
As you look through a v.
f.
the main points on an image will be easier to bring on paper using the graduated marks.
The v.
f.
and the paper that you will draw on are necessary to be in the same proportion.
Now let's see how you make a v.
f.
This could be as simple as holding your hands together to make a simple frame.
If you don't want to use your hands, you can always use something in your own home, such as two L- shaped pieces of mat board or the sides of a cardboard box.
You will also need a ruler and a utility knife.
Once you got all the material that you need, you can now begin making your frame.
First cut pieces of mat board or cardboard for windows of different sizes like 10" x 13" for a 6" x 9" window, 12"x 14" for a 8" x 10" window, etc.
The next step involves drawing the diagonals and central lines (one vertically and one horizontally) on the board.
Now measure and cut windows on the board leaving 2" on every side.
You can choose what proportion frame you will use for each of your drawings.
Next, lightly draw the center lines on your piece of paper.
Line up the center lines of the paper with the ones of the viewfinder frame.
Now extend the lines from the frame to the paper using your ruler.
You can now start to draw a rectangle larger than the viewfinder but in proportion to it.
The rectangle you draw must start in one of the corners and anywhere along the diagonal.
All of the lines must be square.
If you have done all this, the only thing left to do now is to start drawing.
