How To Airbrush Jimi Hendrix Onto A Guitar
I had an older Sunlite acoustic guitar that was in serious need of refinishing.
After all of the family functions, parties and passing it around many a campfire it had accumulated some scars.
I only paid $120 for it about three years ago and to have it professionally done would have cost me double that so for a fraction of the price I bought some supplies and set out to do it myself.
Since I know how to airbrush and I was going to have to sand the whole guitar I figured I might as well customize it and Airbrush something on the back.
I didn't want anything with a lot of detail just something simple that reflected the style of music that I like to play.
I play a lot of Hendrix so it was an easy choice.
I found a picture that I liked on line then loaded it into Photoshop where I turned it into a black and white and then pasteurized it to separate the shades into layers; it also simplifies the photo showing less detail.
What I ended up with was something that you might see in a t-shirt design which was exactly what I wanted.
It would be black with white and gray highlights.
I sanded and prepared the guitar and then painted it all, except the fret board that I masked over, flat black.
Using the black as the base I would replace the white with a solid layer of silver paint and the gray layer would be a light translucent layer of the same silver.
Using matte finish spray mask I covered the back of the guitar and transferred the Hendrix onto it by tracing it on using graphite paper.
