Purpose

• Some components dealing with encoding and decoding data in Nero 9 are licensed from third-party companies; because Nero must pay these companies per user, the company requires all users to activate the patented material.
  
  

Method

• Nero 9 automatically asks users to perform patent activation after installation. If not connected to the Internet at this time, users have up to 30 days to activate manually in Nero 9 before patented functions cease working.
  
  

Effect

• Patent activation locks the software to the computer Nero 9 is installed on. The program will not activate a second time on a new machine. Users wishing to move their install to a new computer must contact Nero support to deactivate their old license.
  
  

Troubleshooting

• Patent activation will fail if Nero 9 cannot access the Internet. To complete the connection, HTTP Port 80 must be open and software firewalls must allow access to "NeroPatentActivation.exe."
