How to Refinish Southern Yellow Pine Woodwork
- 1). Sand the southern yellow pine woodwork with 180-grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the wood grain to prevent splintering. Stop sanding when the pine appears dull.
- 2). Sand the yellow pine woodwork with 220-grit sandpaper. Stop sanding when the pine feels smooth.
- 3). Eliminate sawdust from the woodwork by wiping it with tack cloths.
- 4). Protect any areas adjacent to the yellow pine woodwork with professional painter's tape. Cover flooring beneath the woodwork with dropcloths.
- 5). Coat the pine woodwork with a light-colored oil-based stain, first stirring the stain thoroughly, using a 2-inch paintbrush that is specifically engineered for oil-based paints. Wait four hours for the woodwork to dry.
- 6). Wash the brush with mineral spirits.
- 7). Coat the stained yellow pine woodwork with varnish, using the clean paintbrush. Wait two hours for the varnish to dry.
