Overcoming Generalized Anxiety Disorder

30
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (or GAD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by chronic anxiety, exaggerated worry and tension, even when there is little or nothing to provoke it.
The person suffering from GAD will swear and defend their view that there are numerous reasons to feel anxious and panic.
Even when given the opportunity to relax, the person cannot or will not divert their attention from worries and fears.
One of my biggest complaints against Psychology is the dedication to labels.
It was for this reason that I left the field of Psychology actually.
Psychology is a field of study that was originally meant to understand the mind.
The point of this field was to understand why the mind thinks certain things at certain times and what we can do about it.
It is strange to think that Psychology has been around for almost 100 years and still we never discuss how Labels themselves affect and change what you think and how you act.
A Label like Generalized Anxiety Disorder does one simple thing to your mind and you should be aware of it.
It convinces you that you have a disorder, that you are not normal, and that there is something wrong with you.
This is not true.
There is nothing wrong with you except your belief that there is something wrong with you.
Think about it, how much attention did you give your fears and worries before you started believing you had a problem dealing with them? Every day you convince yourself that it is harder and harder to not be anxious, worried, or fearful and every day it gets harder.
Now you go into situation that never used to bother you and find yourself riddled in fear and self consciousness.
Why? Because you expect it.
Always remember that you experience your life through a filter.
The filter is your mind and what you choose to think.
If you were to go into a crowded room and never once worry about how you look, act, or speak then you would have a better time and probably make a better impression on people than if you were constantly self-conscious and afraid to mingle.
It takes practice but it is easier than you think.
Do NOT think about how overwhelming anxiety can be, choose to believe that it is simple to live fear free and you will overcome your generalized anxiety disorder forever!
