The Cruelty Connection

44
Unfortunately, this article raises several questions with no easy answers, but we need not content ourselves with ashes and browbeating. There are things we can do:
  • Take action when we see child abuse -
Run, don't walk, to the nearest authorities when you see evidence of child abuse. You could save the life of a child as well as the future agony of helpless animals.
  • Speak up against animal cruelty -
The animal abuser is just practicing his skills. His wife or child may be next in line. Don't confront him or her, but report his actions to authorities.

  • Get involved in legislative issues -
A number of states are considering beefing up animal cruelty laws. If your state is among them, write or call your state representatives urging that animal cruelty be considered a felony in your state. If there are no plans for such legislation in your state, consider mounting your own campaign. It worked in Iowa; it can work in your state too.
  • Fight animal abuse on every front -
    • Join Organizations -
There are a number of existing organizations making the battle. Strength is in numbers, so find one in your area and become active.
    • Make the Net work for you -
If you have an existing web site, put it to use promoting humane treatment for animals and protesting existing laws. If you do not have a web site, consider starting one. There are many communities on the Net which provide free space for individual use. Make a Difference by following the link. You'll find graphics and ideas for creating your own animal advocacy web site.

No Pollyanna-ish Thinking Here

It won't be a piece of cake, good readers. For every two obstacles removed, another one will present itself. To quote again the words of the good Albert Schweitzer: Anyone who proposes to do good must not expect people to roll stones out of his way, but must accept his lot calmly if they even roll a few more upon it.

I'm not sure I go along with "accepting my lot calmly", but I've got strong shoulders to roll a few more boulders. I fully believe that the future of our world depends on good people working together to rid the planet of evil, and we can start together on this small front. Then our children and our children's children can carry on the battle to save Planet Earth.

Wish I could be around to witness it.
