What to Do in Waikiki - Budget Style

33
Typically people who visit Hawaii go for the sun, the sand and the warm tropical climate.
But if these types of activities start to get dull, which for some people, they can after day two or three, there are plenty of other activities to do in and around Waikiki that will not break the wallet.
Personally, I never get tired of the sand and beach but by about day 3 in Waikiki I've had enough of all the tourists and crowds that flock here.
Rent A Bike There are numerous bike rental places in Waikiki.
Just ask the concierge at your hotel and I can guarantee that you will be directed to one within 3 blocks of wherever you are.
It comes with a lock and basket and can be found for a little as $15 a day.
  Cheaper for extended periods.
But once you have your bike, where do you go? There is the scenic Kapiolani Park, just at the east end of Waikiki.
You can ride through this spacious park with an awesome view of the Diamond Head crater in the distance.
There is the Honolulu Zoo right there in the park as well.
If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, trek along the shore towards Diamond Head as far as you can go and then proceed to follow it up the road.
You will find some deserted beaches up that way.
We don't recommend swimming at these beaches for the tides can be rough often, unless of course you are an experienced swimmer.
Take your bicycle down to Ft.
DeRussey, a large park near the waterfront at the western end of Waikiki - lock it up and hang out at a beach that has less tourists.
Venture even further west and you will hit Ala Moana beach.
This is a great place to swim because of the breakwater.
On weekends you will find lots of locals here bbq'n and lots of kids in the water.
Just a stonesthrow past the Ala Moana beach is the Ala Moana Shopping center.
Diamond Head Crater Diamond Head Crater is the large rigid mountainside located just at the eastern end of Waikiki, viewable from seemingly everywhere.
There is a great hike you can take up to the top of the peak offering an outstanding view of all of Honolulu and the surrounding region.
It's only $1 per person to enter the park if you enter on foot.
Accessing the Diamond Head Crater park is easy if you take the bicycle.
Just ask for directions to Monsarrat Street and follow that all the way up the hill.
When you approach a junior college on the left, look for the entrance to the park on the right.
The hike up to the peak takes about 45 minutes each way and is usually crowded.
But it's definitely worth it for the view.
Souvenirs Forget about getting souvenirs in Waikiki.
They are way overpriced.
Ask the concierge at your hotel how to get the shuttle to the Aloha Stadium swap meet.
The swap meet is open on Wednesdays and Weekends.
You will find excellent deals on souvenirs and just about everything under the sun.
If you can't get to the Aloha Stadium, Walmart is another great place to go for reasonably priced souvenirs.
Avoid the souvenirs shops in Waikiki like the plague unless you don't mind paying an arm and a leg.
