Fishing at Lake Sutherland in Washington State
- Sutherland Lake spans 370 acres in Clallam County. Anglers can fish at this lake year-round for a variety of fish species. The lake has an average depth of 57 feet and a maximum depth of 86 feet. A boat launch access is available for trolling anglers. According to the Washington-Oregon Game and Fish Magazine, Sutherland Lake is among Clallam County's most heavily stocked lakes with releases of about 14,000 rainbow trout annually.
- According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Sutherland is a good fishing ground for cutthroat and rainbow trout up to 12 inches or larger. Other game fish in the lake include salmon and Kokanee. Rainbow trout are stocked in the lake in March and May.
- Fly fishing is the preferred method for catching cutthroat throat in Washington, according to All About Fishing. Other fishing methods for cutthroats include using other lures such as minnows, grub-imitating lures and live bait. Rainbow trout feed on small insects, crustaceans, minnows, and worms.
- Drift fishing is a common method for freshwater salmon fishing, according to the Washington Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers drift-fishing for for salmon and Kokanee in Sutherland cast a line upstream and let it drift down through the pool and reel in their line to start over again. Typical drift fishing gear for freshwater salmon is an 8 1/2- or 9-foot rod with a 15-lb. to 30-lb. pound line, and either a spinning reel or a bait-casting reel.
- All Washington anglers age 15 and above must have a valid fishing license to fish in the state. Anglers are also required to carry a Catch and Record card at all times to track quantity of specific harvested fishes including salmon. Fishing season is open year-round at Sutherland and statewide minimum size and limitations apply to all catches. Chumming, or fishing with the use of fish parts to attract fish, is permitted, according to the 2009-2010 Washington Sport Fishing Rules Pamphlet.
