How to Change Drum Pads
- 1). Place your vehicle safely on a jack. Make sure it is properly supported before you begin.
- 2). Remove the wheels for the areas where you need to change the drum pads, using a tire wrench to remove the bolts that hold the wheels on the axle.
- 3). Locate the brakes and remove the dust grease cap from the drum by prying it loose with a flat head screwdriver and hammer.
- 4). Remove the cotter pin that holds the retaining nut, using a pair of needle nosed pliers to bend the ends of the pin back into alignment so that it can be removed. Loosen and remove the retaining nut, using a wrench.
- 5). Remove any screws or bolts that hold the drum to the hub. Gently wiggle the drum until it begins to come loose. The outer bearing should release first, followed by the drum itself.
- 6). Place the new drum pad back into place and attach any screws that need to be fastened to the hub. Reattach the retaining nut, tighten, and place the cotter pin back in to lock everything in place.
- 7). Place the dust grease cap back on and gently tap with a hammer until it is securely in place.
