How to Install a Car Stereo in a 1987 Jeep
- 1). Raise the hood. Loosen the bolt that holds the grounding cable to the negative battery terminal. Remove the cable from the battery.
- 2). Pry the dashboard trim panel surrounding the stereo from the dash with a trim panel removal tool. Work the tool around the edges of the panel to free it from the dashboard.
- 3). Remove the screws at the sides of the factory stereo. Slide the stereo from the dashboard dock and disconnect the wiring from the back of the unit. Unplug the antenna cable from the back of the radio.
- 4). Insert a faceplate adapter into the stereo dock. Feed the stereo wiring and antenna cable through the faceplate adapter. Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter. Plug the wiring harness adapter leads into the corresponding outlets on the back of the new stereo. Insert the antenna cable lead into the antenna input on the rear of the new stereo.
- 5). Slide the new stereo into the dashboard stereo mounting dock until it locks. Place the dash panel back onto the dashboard. Press around the edges of the panel to snap it back onto the dashboard.
- 6). Place the battery cable back onto the negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt with a wrench.
