What to Do in Southampton

5

    Waterfront

    • Southampton services several cruise ships and superliners. To see the ships, head to the western bank of Southampton Water or Hythe Marina village for a good view.

If you prefer to take a boat trip rather than watch, try Blue Box Sailing for a chance to see a crew on an ocean-racing yacht. This adventure will accommodate experienced sailors and newcomers. Or take a cruise aboard a luxury ship, such as The Ashleigh or Ocean Scene. Both can carry more than 300 passengers and are operated by Blue Funnel.

    Museums

    • The Maritime Museum relates the port city's history and also serves as the home to the Titanic Voices Exhibition, which tells the story of the ill-fated ship that set sail from Southampton on its maiden voyage. See artifacts and photographs, and hear the voices of locals affected by the ship's sinking.

The Southampton Hall of Aviation relates the tales of 26 aviation companies and how the legendary Spitfire was developed. The plane was designed in Southampton and played a large role in Britain's defenses in World War II. Other exhibits show the part that the city and region played in military and civilian aircraft.

Visit the Southampton City Art Gallery to view its collection. The gallery is home to more than 3,000 works that cover six centuries of European art history, including pieces from Allegretto Nuzi.

    Shopping

    • Go to the West Quay Shopping Center. The 800,000-square-foot center contains a large array of eateries and plenty of parking. Right next door is The Mall. This shopping venue consists of major chain stores and some local shops and services. On Sundays, visit the Hampshire Farmers' Market. It's located near West Quay.

    Other activities

    • Try the Mayflower if musical theater interests you. Live music, comedy shows, ballet and opera are performed at the theater, which also draws performances straight from the famed West End. Another spot to visit is Paultons Park, a theme park that caters to the entire family with more than 50 rides and attractions.

If local history interests you, try a self-guided walk such as the Titanic Trail. This walk will take you to memorials and locations associated with the ship. A mini Southampton tour is another possibility. This tour starts at the Tourist Information Centre and includes all the city's main attractions, such as the Tudor House and St. Michael's Church.

Finally, visit Old Town, and follow the footsteps of Henry V, William Shakespeare and Jane Austen.
