The Best Time of the Year to Lay New Sod Grass
- The best seasons for planting sod include spring, late summer and early fall. However, the Yard Care website recommends laying sod in the spring if you live in a Southern state, since temperatures in the fall still remain quite hot. If you choose to lay sod in the fall, do so at least one month before the first frost of the season. The sod's roots will need to establish before cold weather arrives.
- Avoid laying sod during extremely hot or extremely cold temperatures. A few days before you plan to plant sod, check the weather forecast. If the forecast predicts extreme temperatures, consider waiting a few days. Sod is extremely delicate during its first few days and extreme temperatures can hurt the grass.
- New sod requires careful watering to keep the soil moist. Correct watering is critical to the sod's survival. Avoid laying sod during extremely dry and humid conditions. But too much water can also affect the sod's survival. Again, check the weather forecast and avoid laying sod if high amounts of rain are expected in the first few days after sod is laid.
