How to Install a Dodge Water Pump

27
    • 1). Drain the radiator by turning the drain cock located on the bottom of the radiator in a clockwise direction with a wrench.

    • 2). Disconnect both radiator hoses from the water pump. Each hose is attached to the water pump with a hose clamp. To disconnect each hose, turn the screw on the end of the hose clamp in a counterclockwise direction with a flathead screwdriver until the clamp is loose, then pull each hose away from the water pump.

    • 3). Loosen the bolts which hold the power steering pump, alternator and any other belt-driven accessories to the engine with a wrench. Take care not to remove the bolts. The bolts should only be loosened enough to release the tension on the belts which power each accessory.

    • 4). Remove the fan assembly by removing the four bolts located in the center of the fan with a wrench, then by pulling the fan away from the engine. Once the fan assembly has been removed, the pulley which sits behind the fan can then be removed by pulling it away from the engine.

    • 5). Pull the belts which drive the accessory's identified in Step 3 away from the engine.

    • 6). Remove any brackets which attach to the water pump. Some Dodge's use accessory brackets which install directly to face of the water pump. The bracket used for the power steering is the most common bracket attached to the face of the pump. Remove the bolts which hold the bracket to the water pump with a wrench, then move the bracket(s) to the side of the water pump.

    • 7). Remove the water pump by first removing each bolt which holds the water pump to the engine, then by pulling the water pump away from the engine. If the pump will not pull away from the engine, insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver between the pump and the engine, then pry the water pump free.

    • 8). Coat one side of a new water pump gasket with gasket sealer, then place the coated side against the new water pump. Coat the opposite side of the gasket with gasket sealer, then place the new water pump against the engine. Secure the pump into place by installing each of the pump's bolts through the pump and into the engine, then by tightening each bolt with a wrench.

    • 9). Reattach any brackets removed in Step 6 to the water pump with the bracket's bolts.

Install the pulley removed in Step 4 by simply pressing the pulley onto the face of the water pump. Attach the fan to the pulley by inserting the fan's four bolts through the center of the fan assembly into the water pump, then by tightening each of the four bolts with a wrench.

Slide each accessory's drive belt over the fan blades, then slide each belt into the groove on the appropriate pulleys. There are typically three pulleys that each component's belt much surround: the pulley at the bottom of the engine (attached to the harmonic balancer), the pulley mounted to the water pump, and the pulley mounted on the face of the accessory.

    • 12

Pull each belt-driven accessory away from the engine to tighten the belt, then tighten the accessory's mounting bolts with a wrench while maintaining pressure on the accessory's belt.

    • 13

Connect the radiator hoses to the water pump by first sliding each hose over the snouts on the water pump, then by tightening the screw on each hose clamp with a flathead screwdriver.

    • 14

Close the drain cock on the bottom of the radiator, then fill the radiator with antifreeze to complete the installation process.
