The Sheik Zayed Grand Mosques an icon of unity and a popular sacred mosque in the United Arab Emirates. The last president His HighnessSheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, widely known as the father of UAE was the main figure behind the development of the project. The late president who died in 2004 is also buried in the grounds of this hallowed mosque. The mosque is customary place for the Islamic community and is at its busiest during Friday prayers and on Eid. It is the largest mosque in UAE having the capacity to hold over 40,000 people and is managed by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center placed within the section of east minarets.
The design of the mosque is also a sight in itself to behold. The concept of unity was one of the main underlying themes in the efforts to build such a mosque. Materials from places like United Kingdom, Morocco, China and Italy were used in its construction, which was done by more than 3000 workers, costing over 545 million US dollars. The 82 Moroccan minarets and Turkish designs in its walls are also some of the prevalent features of the mosque's architecture. Eco-friendly materials in their natural state such as marble, crystal, gold, ceramics and semi-presious stones were also incorporated in to the building's structure. The world's largest carpet which was made by an Iranian carpet company is also a part of the mosque's unique features. It spreads over 5627 square meters and weighs 35 tons. German chandeliers encrusted with Swarovski crystals are also visible throughout the mosque. The famed Qibla wall contains 99 attributes of Alla in traditional Kufi writing and is lit via fiber-optic lighting. The pools along the walkway in the grounds of the mosque mirror the moon on a starry night.
