How to Get Flood Zone Information
- 1). Log on to online sources like Floodsmart.gov, a website sponsored by the National Flood Insurance Program. This site offers tips on preparedness and lists different types of insurance coverage, but most importantly provides a map that homeowners use to determine their home's level of flood risk. More comprehensive flood zone information can be obtained by browsing through the wealth of info listed on the government's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) site.
- 2). Provide either of these sites with important personal information such as your home's physical mailing address; if you're looking for information not related to your home but in general, use the drop-down boxes on each site to choose a state and region for an overall view of flood risk and flood history of the given area. The resulting map can be printed for free or ordered from either site for a small fee.
- 3). Call your local engineering department in your county or city. Usually listed in Public Works, the engineering department will be able to give accurate information in regards to the exact location of the home or property, such as history and potential for flooding.
- 4). Contact your local news station for flood zone information. Your local news and weather station tracks floods yearly during rainy and bad weather seasons. Most news stations also have a website with contact information and flood zone maps.
- 5). Install the free Policymap Flood Zone data widget which shows the latest FEMA data on flood locations around the United States. Policymap is an online mapping tool that you can use to look up any flood in your area.
