Should Children Be Adjusted?

11
As I chiropractor, I am often asked by patients if they should bring their children in for a spinal exam and adjustment.
After I tell them that it would be an honor to take care of their children, I am often hit with a series of questions.
Is it safe to have my child adjusted? How old do they have to be before they can be adjusted? Do children even need to be adjusted? First, it is 100% safe to have your child adjusted.
Your chiropractor will likely use a completely different technique to adjust your child as opposed to the way he adjusts you.
In general, chiropractors use a much lighter and gentler approach to adjusting children, so you don't have to worry about your chiropractor dropping his weight onto your child like he may with you.
Also, there is little or no risk of injury to your child, and their growth certainly will not be stunted by chiropractic treatments.
There is not a minimum age for a child to have their first adjustment.
Personally, I was adjusted for the first time when I was three months of age.
A chiropractor I work with adjusted one of his children within hours of their birth after he was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck multiple times.
When adjusting children this age, we are not looking to hear the "pops and cracks" that are generally associated a chiropractic adjustment.
In this case, the adjustment relies much more on applying pressure as opposed to making a thrust.
Finally, do children really need to be adjusted? If your child is suffering from neck or back pain, absolutely they should be adjusted.
Children respond much quicker to chiropractic care than adults, as it takes much less time to fix their issues, since the problem hasn't been there for years.
Often times I see that a patient's pain is not the result of any single action, but instead due to a number of micro traumas over time.
Many of these micro traumas may have happened in childhood.
Think of the number of times you were running as a child and fell down, or how many times you fell off your bike.
As a child, we are able to get right back up and keep going, but imagine the same thing happening to us as we age.
We would likely feel pain instantly.
The point is, children put their bodies through a lot, so they should have their spine checked for any early signs of spinal misalignments.
Fixing minor problems now goes a long way towards keeping them out of pain as they grow older.
Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment for children of all ages.
Not only will it help children who are currently experiencing neck or back pain, but it will also help to prevent spinal problems from occurring in the future.
