Transforming Tea into Frozen Treats

41

A warm cup of tea can be a great way to relax and take a break when the weather is cool, but you may not always want a hot beverage in the middle of summer. That’s ok, because you can transform your favorite tea flavors into your favorite frozen desserts. Ice cream, sorbet, ice pops, and milkshakes can all be flavored with your favorite specialty tea. Check out these six recipes for some fun ideas to give you inspiration.

Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream

Green tea ice cream is probably the first frozen tea dessert you will think of, because it is actually available many places. The bright green ice cream can be a bit of a surprise to someone expecting mint, but it’s complex flavor will be a welcome treat to any green tea fans.

Non-Dairy Green Tea Ice Cream

It can be tough to duplicate the creamy texture of ice cream if you don’t eat dairy. However, there are a wide range of soy products on the market that can help. This recipes makes use of both soy milk and soy yogurt to replace the dairy. Please note that this recipe is not vegan, as it does use eggs to give it the texture of a frozen custard.

Lemon & Green Tea Ice Cream Tortes

Once you’ve made your green tea ice cream, combine it with lemon ice cream and strawberries to make this unique molded frozen dessert. Molded desserts are a fun way to serve ice cream and this one uses individual ramekins to form the torte.

Iced Tea Popsicles

Can it get any easier than a one ingredient frozen dessert?

My guess is no. The secret to iced tea popsicles is to brew the tea exactly how you would like to drink it. You can use just about any iced tea you like. Think about sweet tea or fruit-flavored ice teas if those are your preference. Just make sure to brew a little stronger than you would if you were having hot tea. After all, the colder something is, the less intense the flavor will be.

Clementine-Chai Sorbet Recipe

The spice of tea can be a great flavor enhancer for fruit based sorbet recipes. Clementines are a small citrus fruit (think Mandarins or tangerines) that are delicious to eat or to juice for frozen treats.

Chai Milkshake

Who says you can’t have dessert first? This milkshake is intended as more of a filling breakfast than an evening treat. It adds frozen yogurt, chai and protein powder to give you a boost of nutrition in a very fun form. I prefer using vanilla yogurt (or ice cream) with chai so that the flavors can stand on their own instead of competing with the chocolate.
