Although this plant officially grows well outdoors only in zones 9, 10 and 11, it is widely popular due to its unusual flowering habit. In late summer through winter, the blooms open a soft purple, change to a pastel lilac and finally turn to a near-white before fading away. It is this color change that earns this shrub its common name -- and its popularity. You will have all three colors blooming at once on a bush.

    • 2). To grow the Yesterday Today and Tomorrow plant, or Brunsfelsia pauciflora, you will need gentle heat, a slightly acidic soil and average watering. In areas with hot sun it will need some shade protection. Yet although the Brunfelsia is considered a tropical or tender perennial, I have seen many of these plants do perfectly well in temperatures that drop into the mid and high 20's at night. They also seem to take more sun than would be expected for plants that evolved in the woodlands of Brazil. Personally, I consider this plant to be a lot more adaptable than usually credited.

    • 3). The Yesterday Today and Tomorrow plant has evergreen leaves and will grow between 4 - 7' tall, though it accepts some pruning should you want to keep it smaller. The flowers are not only plentiful and unusually colorful, but they are also fragrant. The seeds, however, are poisonous as is the rest of the plant. So don't allow children or pets to eat it.

    • 4). Grow the Brunsfelsia where it can be seen in flower. Plant colorful flowers of a lower height that bloom in the spring and early summer in front so the green leaves will form a handsome backdrop. You can put it in a large decorative pot where it can enhance any entry or patio. If you want to move it indoors in cold weather, you might want to set your pot on a plant dolly so the wheels will make it easy to move when you need to.
