How To Install a Door

20
Hanging a door might sound like a simple task but it isn't. There are tons of things that can go wrong, uneven spaces, gaps or the door might not close properly at all. Let's see what are the correct steps in the door installation process.

First and important part before you start installing anything is to measure. Using a tape measure the height and width of the door opening. Be sure to measure the width in the bottom, center and upper part of the opening. Measure the floor if it's leveled. Small deference in a few mm may prove to be quite a problem when you install the door. There might be differences that have to be taken into account. Write down all the measurements.

When you go the store to purchase your new door look at your measurements and purchase a door that is 2 inches (about 5 cm) smaller than the rough opening. The door however should be trimmed if it's to large. Remember, that you will probably have a carpet some day you would want the door to go over it when you open it. The ideal number for trimming the door is 2mm at the top and 6-12mm at the bottom (some carpets like wool ones have are very high if you have one near your door you'll have to trim it at least 10mm). Mark the cut lines with a pencil. From My experience a saw is better when you want to trim more than 5mm and a hand plane is better for smaller adjustment.

Next, is placing the hinges on the door. You'll have to decide in which direction the door will open. Usually, the correct way is to open the door in to the room and the other way around. Another way of deciding where to place the hinges is to see where the light switch is. It always should be to your right when you enter the room and the hinges will be on the left.

Place the door with hinge side upwards. Mark 15 cm from the top and 15 from the bottom. This will be the place where you will install the hinges. Mark the size of the hinge with a pencil and use a chisel to make the mortises for it. Don't chisel too much the hinge should fit perfectly but it should not be too deep, this is a hard fix afterwards and will probably look ugly (you use another piece of wood under the hinge to lift it up), so be careful. Place the hinges in the mortises and drew pilot holes for the screws. Next, screw the hinges to the door.

For the next task you'll probably need an assistant. Lift the door to the door frame and mark around the hinge with a pencil. Chisel the marked places to make mortises for the hinges. Mark the pilot holes like you did with the door and screw the hinges afterwards. And this is it, your new door should be positioned properly and closing and opening effortlessly. If you need to make any adjustment just measure everything again and inspect if there are places that need to be trimmed or fixed.

I hope this tutorial is easy enough for you and the installation process will go as planned. If you experience any problems and you can't sort them out contact a professional builder, like the builders in Chelsea, for help.
