Addiction: Various Significant Signs

1
The word "addiction" is extremely overused by nearly all of society. We have a tendency to assert to be "addicted" to everything from chocolate to action movies and everything in between. Valid addiction, however, is more insidious than the typical "jonesing" sensation that you get for the things you are passionate about. But some objects or substances that aren't usually destructive may in fact be the objects of "addictions." A number of inhabitants truly are "addicted" to things we may normally think are harmless. Is that hot fudge sundae something you mildly desire, or is it a real obsession? We'll cover several of the warning signs of true addiction.

Are you quite tolerant to bigger quantities of the thing you want? In the past perhaps one cup of caffeine was adequate to make you feel ready to take on the day. Today, though, it could take a lot more than that to help you feel evened out. This can be one of several indicators of addiction. While we consistently want more of something to help ourselves feel better it is a symptom that the something we're craving is starting to gain control over us. That syndrome is a typical indication that someone can be an addict.

Do you strive to keep individuals from finding your stash of hidden goodies? A huge amount of alcoholics and drug addicts do just that. They do this for the reason that they've realized that their consumption has become conspicuous so they keep hidden things around their homes and workplaces so that getting a fix is easy and private. If you've started stashing things out of sight to escape having individuals commenting on them, this is a warning sign. Keep in mind, however, that hiding a bag of chocolate from someone because you only require your fair share of it is different than hiding chocolate all over your house and telling people that you do not eat it any more.

Are you open with other people on how much or how habitually you have what you desire? For example, alcoholics will time and again begin drinking at home before going out for drinks with friends. This permits them to drink as much as they fancy without it looking like they are consuming a lot in public. Or they could simply keep consuming alcohol following parting from their friends. When you dishonestly conceal what you're truly consuming like this, the meaning is clear: you're ashamed. Listen to that emotion.

It's important to bear in mind that addiction can turn up in many forms. It isn't always drug addiction or alcoholism; regular actions like eating, shopping, or even just getting some exercise can turn out to be objects of addiction for some of us. Don't ignore the indicators of addiction; get help if you find yourself concealing things away, concealing your behavior, feeling ashamed of what you're doing, and noticing that it takes more and more to make you feel calm or happy. Just about anything is all right in moderation--it is when that something takes over other areas of our lives that we run into trouble.

Don't hesitate to inform a friend or trusted counselor and ask for help if you're concerned that you may be an addict. You can regain control of your own destiny and leave your dependence behind.
