How to Select a Deer Stand for Hunting
- 1). Walk the area looking for deer "signs" or feces. Visit the hunting area well before the hunting season. Along with droppings, look for deer rubs. Bucks rub their antlers on small shrubs to remove the velvet covering. A rub is a sign that the area contains at least one buck.
- 2). Scout the area with field glasses just before the hunting season. According to gameandfishmag.com, the hunter is looking for feeding areas, bedding areas and the travel paths between them. Scout in the early morning and late evening.
- 3). Select the deer stand appropriate for the situation. Stands in open or brushy areas, without trees, are usually camouflaged ground blinds. These are commercially available from a number of sources in a variety of sizes and styles. Look for a camouflage pattern close to the vegetation in the hunting area. Tree stands come in a number of styles, including climbing stands or ladders. Select a tree for the stand that is large enough to support it.
- 4). Place the stand as early as possible before the hunting season starts. Place the stand where it provides clear shooting lanes at the paths the deer will follow.
