How to Lease Hunting Property in Michigan

24
    • 1). Scout the areas you are interested in hunting. If you live in an urban area, such as Detroit, are you interested in finding a property to lease that may be more expensive and may have less game but is within easy driving distance, or are you willing to drive out a few hours? If you find a farm that is in an area known for having good hunting, you may want to leave a note in the mailbox introducing yourself and asking if the owners would be interested in doing a hunting lease. You could also try knocking on the door and speak with the owners if they are home.

    • 2). Check with the local gun store or sporting goods dealer where you purchase your hunting supplies to see if they know of any leases currently available. Also check to see if the store has a bulletin board where hunting leases may be posted.

    • 3). Do a search on your local Craigslist. There are usually hunting leases available. If there aren't any in your area, Craigslist also lists leases that are nearby. For instance, the Battle Creek, Michigan Craigslist might also list hunting leases available in Saginaw.

    • 4). Check out the forums and classifieds on Michigan hunting websites such as Michigan Sportsman, which has a land-for-lease section.

    • 5). Turn to hunting lease specialty websites such as hightechredneck.com or basecampleasing.com, which lists many available hunting leases and hunting clubs with leases in the Michigan area.

    • 6). Talk with a property owner who is interested in leasing his property to find out the specifics of his agreement. Ask him how much he is charging, how often you can hunt, if there are any restrictions regarding times or areas of the property you can hunt on, if the property is being used by any other recreational users, and how many other hunters will be on the property. You do not want to lease a property that is seriously overcommitted to too many other hunters or has ATV users gunning around the woods, spooking wildlife, every Saturday morning.

    • 7). Sign a lease agreement with the owner of the land you are interested in hunting. The Michigan Farm Bureau has created a hunting lease agreement sample that will give you an idea of what a good lease should include. You may want to ask for a multi-year lease if you know that the property has good hunting on it.
