  In a master bathroom, tiling presents the opportunity to set the mood for the room. Use tiles to suit a variety of bathroom designs, from a relaxing space for long bubble baths to an invigorating room to prepare for the day. As you plan, determine the amount of money you want to spend and the space you want to cover, which will help you plan the type and number of tiles to purchase.
  
  

Spa Tiles

• To create the feeling of a spa-like oasis in your master bathroom, use a combination of blue and white tiles. Look for tiles in a bold, Greek blue or a bright turquoise with a bit of texture to add visual interest and depth. For a soothing contrast and an airy, open feeling, pair the blue tiles with stark white walls and accents. You might tile the interior of the shower in blue tiles and extend the pattern out into the rest of the bathroom for a cohesive, continuous design, for example, or tile the bottom half of the room in blue and leave the upper half painted white.
  
  

Natural Stone

• Create an earthy feeling in your bathroom with natural stone tile. Buy tiles in a soft, neutral hue that evokes the sense of being on the beach or in the woods, and use them to create a base along the bottom half of the room. You might use two shades of tile for visual interest and contrast; put the darker shade lower on the wall to anchor the design, or add accent tiles to a solid background.
  
  

Multiple Sizes

• For visual interest, combine two sizes of tiles in similar color shades, which will add a sense of texture and depth without appearing visually overwhelming. Use the larger tiles to cover the base of the sink and the bathtub, for example, and use the smaller tiles on the walls and the interior of the shower. If you cannot find different sizes in the same color, choose a shade that is as close as possible for a cohesive feeling.
  
  

Black and White

• Because master bathrooms tend to be larger than standard bathrooms, you can often get away with a bold, high-contrast tile design. Create an open feeling by using a mostly white palette and black accents. Use miniature tiles to create black stripes along the interior of the shower or the base of the sink, and scatter various black tiles along the walls. Continue the contrast-heavy design on the floor by creating a geometric print in black; use white grout between black tiles to increase the contrast.
  
  

Gradient

• For a dramatic bathroom statement create a color gradient using tiles. Start with darker tiles on the bottom and move up to lighter tiles; you will need to choose tiles carefully or order custom colors to fill the entire range of shades. As you move upward, intersperse darker and lighter tiles so that you avoid stark boundary lines and create a smoother gradient. The lighter tiles near the face will reflect natural light on your face in the mirror, and the overall effect will be organic and relaxing.
