Elk Hunting in La Pine, Oregon
- La Pine is a rural community located in Deschutes County in central Oregon; it is surrounded by thousands of tall pines and the Cascades region hunting grounds.
- Larger than deer and slightly smaller than moose, bull elk can grow to be well over 500 lbs. They are traditionally found in and around forests and mountains and they feed on grass, plants, leaves and bark.
- Open hunting areas around La Pine include upper Deschutes units, Indigo, Santiam and parts of Fort Rock west of U.S. 97.
- The general center-fire firearm season for Cascades bull elk in the region of La Pine is October 16 to 22. Southwest Cascades elk muzzleloader season is from November 13 to 19; the youth controlled elk hunts run from August 1 to December 31 in Santiam and Indigo hunting units.
- Resident and nonresident hunters are required to purchase the relevant hunting licenses and tags to hunt elk at different times and places. In 2010, a resident hunting license is $29.50 and an elk tag is $42.50. Nonresident fees are considerably higher. Season bag limits are one elk in most cases, and all hunters are required to report on their tags at the end of the season--whether they harvest an elk or not.
