How to Make a Holiday Cone Wreath

13
    • 1). Gather or purchase 2 1/2- to 3-inch jack pine or ponderosa pine cones. Although it isn't absolutely necessary to use these particular cones, you do need short squat cones for the outside edges of your wreath. You will need about 30 of these cones. The actual number you use will depend on the size of the base of the cone and the size of the straw wreath you choose.

    • 2). Gather a variety of other cones and seed pods that you find attractive. Be sure to include any nuts native to your area such as acorns or beechnuts. You will need a variety of sizes from medium to large spruce cones to tiny hemlock or cedar cones. Gather ample amounts in all sizes. You can purchase mixed nuts in the grocery store if you do not have access to a variety of wild ones. Cones are often packaged and sold in craft supply stores. See the Resources section for a link.

    • 3). Begin by laying the straw wreath down on the table in front of you. Apply a dab of hot glue to the bottom of a jack pine cone and press the cone against the side of the center ring of the wreath. The cone should be pointing towards the center. Add the next cone so that the edges touch the previous cone. Repeat until you have completed the entire center circle. Gauge yourself carefully so that the final cone fits nicely into the last spot without any spaces between the cones. Trying the cones out for fit prior to gluing will assure that you have a nice fit. Repeat the procedure on the outside of the wreath. Make sure your cones are facing outward.

    • 4). Begin filling in the body of the wreath with cones and nuts. It is best to follow a random pattern. Glue the largest cones and nuts first and work your way to the tiniest. Work until all areas of the straw wreath are covered. Use small cones or nuts to hide bare spots. Don't worry if you need to add small cones partially on top of others to accomplish this; it will provide depth to your wreath.

    • 5). Spray the entire wreath with a clear spray paint to seal and protect it. This will bring out the deep natural hues in the cones and nuts. Spray with glitter paint for a touch of holiday cheer if preferred.
