How to Ignite a Pilot Light on a Gas Furnace

11
    • 1). Turn the wall thermostat to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Check that the thermostat is on the "Heat" setting.

    • 2). Search for your pilot light valve. Follow the gas line to the furnace. Look for a box at the end of the gas line that has a knob with "On," "Pilot" and "Off" stamped on top. This is your pilot valve. Some pilot valves have a red reset button with a lever valve. The position settings are on the lever valve. Locate the end of the gas tube from the pilot valve into the furnace. The end of the gas tube is over a grate.

    • 3). Turn the pilot valve knob or lever to the "Off" position if your are relighting the pilot light. This allows any residual gas to dissipate. Keep the valve in the "Off" position for three minutes.

    • 4). Turn the pilot light knob or valve to the "Pilot" position. Light a long fireplace match, and hold the lit end over the end of the pilot valve tube. Press the pilot valve knob down, or press the rest button if you have a lever. Hold the button or knob down for 30 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up enough to open the main gas valve. Remove the match when the pilot tube is lit.

    • 5). Release the knob or reset button slowly, and turn the knob or lever to the "On" position.
