How to Install Foam Boards to a Steel Building
- 1). Measure the area of the steel building walls to determine how many sheets of foam board you will need. Multiply the width times the height of each wall. Add together the area amounts of all walls to be covered to arrive at the total amount of square-foot surface area. Divide that number by 32, which is the square-foot size of each piece of foam board, to establish the number of sheets needed.
- 2). Open up a tub of construction adhesive and dip the applicator into the bucket. Spread the adhesive evenly over the entire back surface of the foam board, covering the entire area. Line up the foam board vertically at the beginning edge of one corner in the room.
- 3). Press the foam board firmly against the steel wall surface. Put pressure on the entire area of the board to eliminate air pockets and adhere it in place. Apply construction adhesive to the second foam board. Line it up with the first board and repeat the installation process. Continue installing boards in the same manner until you reach the other end of the wall.
- 4). Cut the last piece to fit the remaining space. Measure and mark the cutting line. Score the foam board along the line with a utility knife. Use a straightedge or T-square to guide your cut. Install the last foam board section.
- 5). Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 to cover the remaining walls. Inspect the completed area to make sure there are no gaps and the insulation has been properly installed. Check for adhesive seeping out between the seams and wipe it away with a rag if necessary.
