35
    • 1). Download the application from the Secretary of State's website or get one by calling the office at (800) 477-3632.

    • 2). Take the oath before a notary public or another figure who has the authority to administer oaths, such as a clerk of the courts. He will read the oath on the application. The application contains a section where he can confirm you completed this step.

    • 3). Purchase a surety bond in the amount of $10,000 from any insurance company in the state that offers them. The company will provide you with the bond form you need to submit with your application.

    • 4). Purchase a notary seal or rubber stamp from an office supply store. It must have your name and the words "Notary Public - State of New Mexico." You need to purchase the stamp before submitting the application because you must provide the impression of the seal or stamp on it.

    • 5). Complete the notary application. You must have two residents of the state attest to your good moral character, and they must include their signatures and addresses on the application. Attach the bond form you received from the insurance company, and include a $20 check or money order payable to the Secretary of State.

    • 6). Mail the completed application to:

      Secretary of State

      325 Don Gaspar - Suite 300

      Santa Fe, NM 87503

Once the office processes your application, it will mail out a certificate authorizing your commission. You cannot perform notary services until you receive this certificate.
