I Wonder Whether Trevor Phillips Lives On A Different Planet

27
I have a problem with Trevor Phillips, the Chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Does he live on a different planet by any chance? Or is he simply trying to sound controversial to stay in the public eye and keep his well paid job? Recently, in an interview in The Times, Mr Phillips found nothing better than to accuse the Labour party of being guilty of 'institutional racism' because - and here I want you to pay special attention - Labour, in his opinion, would never elect a black leader.

Wonderful, isn't it? Philips not just comes up with an imaginary situation - because no black politician, as far as I have heard, has yet tried to become Labour leader - but he actually makes a judgement on the basis of a purely hypothetical situation. That's what would happen, he says, if that's what happens.

Brilliant logic for a Chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. So from now on he can simply invent imaginary cases of racist discrimination and racist abuse in an imaginary scenario.

There are numerous possibilities opening for his commission: imaginary cases of job discrimination could take place across the board in different government departments and private companies. Imaginary race riots could erupt in towns and cities. Imaginary hate crimes could be committed and institutional racism can be uncovered in all sorts of places like the moon, for example, because, according to Phillips' logic, if there was life there it would bound to have racial tensions.

As there are countless planets in our universe the scale of the task facing Mr Phillips's commission would be endless and funding needed would be astronomical.

But seriously: what Phillips does is inflame racial tension himself without thinking carefully what he is actually saying. He might even have plans of his own to become a politician soon and take a shot at the big time, for all I know. But unfortunately for him he has scored his own goal this time. For to accuse Labour of institutional racism is paramount to saying that members of the BNP are actively opposed to Holocaust denial.

This is simply absurd. And Phillips looks like someone from a different planet.

Houston, we have a problem.
