Wall Anchors
Difficulty- Easy Equipment- Goggles Power Drill Hammer Screwdriver A lot of redecorating projects will need you, at some point, to hang something from your walls.
There are several wall anchors that allow you to do this, choosing the right one is important.
Picture hook: The picture hook is best for light picture frames and is unsuitable for heavier items.
A picture hook consists of a small hook with a nail facing at a downwards angle.
Variations of the picture hook are available with more nails so that the weight is distributed over a larger area and the hook can carry a greater weight.
Installation is extremely simple requiring you to simply use a hammer to nail it into the wall.
Self tapping screw: These can be screwed into your wall and then a screw can be screwed into the soft head of the self tapping screw.
Be careful not to over tighten these screws or they can cause large holes in your walls.
Plastic wall insert: Only suitable for solid walls.
You will need to drill a pilot hole first before using this anchor.
When the screw is inserted the plastic insert flares open and presses against the inside of the wall.
Only suitable for lighter weights.
Nylon Toggle: The Nylon toggle anchor is strong and is better for holding medium weights.
The nylon toggle can be inserted into a hollow wall, once inside you pop out its 'wings' and you should then be able to screw into the toggle.
Metal Toggle bolt: A metal toggle bolt is very strong, it is best for heavier items.
However, the strength of these anchors comes at a price.
A large pilot hole is needed to fit these into your wall.
Additionally when the bolt is removed the wings will fall off behind the walls and a new toggle bolt will be needed.
Furthermore, if your item needs to be attached to the bolt it will need to be added before the toggle bolt is put into the wall.
Expandable metal wall screw: The casing of this screw opens like an umbrella behind the wall.
A screw with a housing that flares outwards when fastened.
