How to Take the Smell Out of a Mushroom Compost
- 1). Shovel through the compost pile to remove any meat, dairy products or food waste that you put in the compost pile. These items are not necessary for mushroom compost and are what's causing the smell.
- 2). Rake through the compost pile to leave it light and airy. If the compost is compacted, it will begin to smell.
- 3). Turn the pile with a shovel every six days. This will air out the compost and prevent it from smelling bad. Mix the compost so the insides are on the outside and the outsides are now on the inside.
- 4). Drain excess water from your organic matter before adding it to your compost piles. Compost piles will smell bad when they are too wet. Adding dry organic matter will sop up the moisture to remove the smell.
