Miniature Doberman Pinscher Facts

12

    Height, Weight and Health

    • The breed measures between 10 and 12.5 inches in height. A dog with measurements below or above this does not qualify as a Miniature Pinscher according to the American Kennel Club specifications. Dogs and bitches weigh between 8 and 10 pounds. These dogs like to eat and owners must take care with the animal´s diet or they tend to become obese. Miniature Pinschers have an average life expectancy of 15 years. They are generally healthy and don´t have any breed-specific health issues.

    Appearance

    • The breed has a compact, square body with a head in proportion to the body size. They have a strong muzzle and the teeth should meet in a scissor bite. The ears are set high on the head and sometimes are cropped. The dewclaw on the front legs usually is removed and they have small feet resembling cat´s paws. The American Kennel Club stipulates that tails should be cropped, but this is illegal in most European countries. The coat is short and smooth, and shedding is average. Usual coat colors are black and tan or chocolate with tan red.

    Temperament

    • This is a tough, lively little dog that is intelligent, loyal and brave. The dogs generally get on well with other animals and children, but because they may snap, owners should take care when children are around and also ensure that the kids don´t play roughly with the dog as that may provoke it. Good training is essential for this dog and owners must ensure that they establish themselves as pack leader.

    Exercise

    • Even though they are small, these dogs need plenty of exercise and need a daily walk. Playing in a yard provides them with some exercise, but without a walk this breed may develop behavior problems. If you do allow this dog to play in the yard, make sure it is well fenced in and there are no gaps in the fencing that they can get through, as these dogs love to escape and explore.
