• In the game of rummy, a pure sequence is the most important arrangement to have. So focus at getting that first. You are lucky if you have a natural run for it. By building a pure sequence you ensure that you don't end up with the sum of all points of all cards in your hand if your opponent declares at any time.
• Keep an eye on the game your opponents are playing. Make a note of the cards they pick and the ones they discard from the open deck or hand. This will give you an idea of the meld they are building and the cards they are possibly looking at.
• A great way to save your card game is to discard high point card immediately. Holding on to cards like Ace, King, Queen or Jack with the view to build a sequence or set with them can increase your points, playing adversely in your favour if your opponent declares before you.
• Do away with the common misbelief that a sequence can have only 3 cards. On the contrary, a sequence whether pure or with a joker can have 4 cards.
• Opt to build sequence with middle cards as they offer more combinations. For e.g. a 5 of any suit can make a sequence with 3, 4 or 4, 6 or 6, 7. On the other hand an Ace of any suit can be turned into a sequence only with 2, 3 and Q, K both of the latter being high value cards and can pose a problem if your opponent declared before you.
• Avoid picking discarded cards to make your first pure sequence. Just as you do, your opponents watch your moves as well. When you pick a discarded card they may judge your game and hold on to the adjacent cards that you might need.
• Similar colours in the meld can add to confusion. Hence, make sure to arrange your cards in alternate colours like red-black-red or black-red-black. This can keep you from accidentally discarding any useful card.
• The more jokers you have, the brighter are your chances at winning. If you already have a pure sequence in your card game, then use your joker to complete the other sequence.
