How to Jig for Herring
- 1). Tie the main fishing line to the barrel swivel on the end of the multihook Sabiki rig. Use a Uni knot to attach the line to the rig. Moisten the knot before pulling tight.
- 2). Place a round casting weight with molded eye to the bottom of the Sabiki rig. Clip the weight onto the swivel clip on the end of the rig. Choose a 1/2 oz. or heavier weight based on fishing conditions and personal preference.
- 3). Drop the rig into the water from below a pier or boat or cast it out beyond the breakers from the beach.
- 4). Allow the weight to carry the rig down into the water to the bottom or to a level where herring are thought to be feeding.
- 5). Raise the rod tip to bring the rig up and then allow the weight to carry the rig back down into the water. Continue to move the rig up and down slowly in the water.
- 6). Pay attention to the feel of the rod to determine when one or more herring is hooked. Reel the line in to retrieve the herring for use as bait.
