A lot like water in a bucket is sound. Making home renovation projects to reduce noise challenging, if there's a hole in a wall or ceiling, sound will come pouring right through. To make renovating for noise reduction more effective, there are new technologies available:
- To your existing walls, renovate by adding sound damping drywall. Reducing the need for tear-down during renovation, it can be applied in a regular drywall assembly in place of drywall or it can be applied to the current wall assembly. By up to 75% (in some cases, even more than that,) this solution can block and dampen noise. To get great wall soundproofing results, it's a sure fire, easy way.
- Around the perimeter of the room, be sure to also use an acoustical sealant. In general, so that the room is completely air and sound tight, soundproofing sealant should be used to fill all air gaps in wall or floor/ceiling assemblies. Especially around the edges, hinges and locks, be sure all joints and jams are filled appropriately. A large decrease in the noise reduction can be caused through the smallest air gap in a wall assembly. So, ample care should be taken while getting ceiling soundproofing done.
- Over electrical, phone, and plumbing outlet boxes, acoustical putty will secure your soundproofing efforts. It's very easy and convenient to work with. With the putty, simply cover up all outlet boxes, electrical switches, and plumbing hook-ups.
